If you'd like to visit the Mediterranean the next time you're on holiday, there's no better country to see it in than Croatia. You know, there's a reason a number of Roman emperors and wealthy citizens chose to built summer retreats here, the scenery is very beautiful and the waters are the loveliest shade of blue, not to mention the fact that the Adriatic, is the cleanest and calmest sea in the Mediterranean.
Croatia has 1778km of coastline so you could say it's a maritime nation. Most of the major cities like Dubrovnik, Split, Pula, Zadar and Rijeka are located on the shore and constitute major ports as well as tourist attractions. They are all unique mixtures of ancient and modern because you'll find many night clubs and restaurants among the old Roman ruins, thus making for a very pleasurable experience.
But the true delight of the Croatian Adriatic coast is the large number of islands scattered along the coast in many archipelagoes, the main reason why yachties come here. So if you're tired of spending time on the shore, try changing your point of view and booking a sailing holiday to Croatia. There are many sailor-friendly regions such as Istria, Kvarner Bay, Dalmatia and the famous Kornati archipelago.
Istria is the largest peninsula in the Adriatic, the Kvarner Bay has a lot of historical towns along its shores some of which are the best resorts in Croatia, a wild landscape and some of the most beautiful islands in Croatia such as Krk, Cres and Mali Losinj. Dalmatia is a long stretch of land that includes the Kornati Archipelago and also some major Croatia cities such as Split and Dubrovnik, known as the "pearl of the Adriatic".
Veteran yacht charter sailors consider the Croatian coastline some of the best sailing in the Mediterranean thanks to the calm waters, plenty of anchoring points and, last but not least, the beautiful landscape. Some might wonder about the conditions when sailing in Croatia. There are some 50 classic marinas with over 16000 berths and 5500 dry berths. As a rule, most of the marinas, which are all built in the last 30 years and offer good services, are located in excellent positions, either in cities on in picturesque island coves.
Also, the marinas are densely packed, and you'll rarely need to travel more than 10 nautical miles between marinas or anchoring points, a fact which affords the yacht charter enthusiast a lot of mobility. If you can't find a place at the commercial marinas, there is also the option of mooring at the local small fishing harbors, which some tourists prefer because they keep much of the original ambiance but offer no services. Of course, you'll definitely want to drop anchor in one of the 1500 coves in Croatia, or in any of the 200 that qualify as anchorages for 20 or more vessels.
There is even an organization of the Croatian marinas, the ACI - Adriatic Croatia International club which has marinas up and down the coast of the country and which offers high standard quality and have also helped to popularize sailing in the country. They also set up regattas all over the Mediterranean and hold close ties with the German and Slovenian sailing associations.
All in all, it's well worth it to go sailing in Croatia for a relaxing time on the water that will help you to avoid the summer crowds and also get a different perspective on the Croatian landscape. The fact that most of the marinas offer very good services for relatively decent prices, a sailing holiday is definitely an alternative to a regular vacation in a hotel. Just make sure you bring your sea legs with you.
